On the occasion of the 70th anniversary, SAS will present itself to the general public at the Weekend with SAS. On Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24, 2023, SAS workplaces from all over Slovakia will be presented in Bratislava on M.R. Štefánik square. Visitors have a unique chance to gain an interactive insight into the world of science and learn about the research topics and results of the SAS scientific teams. More than 50 stands with various exhibits, activities and competitions await children and adults as well. The lecture-packed Friday stage program will be complemented by the filming of the Experiment with Gregor Mareš and an early evening concert of the Korben Dallas.

Presentation of research topics and results is an extremely important part of scientific work. “We care that the people of this country see what we’re really doing, because at the end of the day, most of our budget comes from taxpayers. We have to show them the science, and this is one of the ways to do it,” emphasizes Pavol Šajgalík, president of the SAS.

SAS covers a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines, which is also reflected in the variety of individual stands. In case of sunny weather, visitors will be able to watch the current image of the Sun with its spots; levitating train will be prepared as well, with which scientists will explain the principles of superconductivity. Several stands will allow you to look into the world of cells through microscopes, observe the fascinating structures of various materials or try pipetting. There will be also virus assembling, memory testing, body composition measurement or a “chemical kitchen” for children.

Lovers of living nature can look forward to the presentation of life hidden under the surface with a demonstration of preparations and live invertebrates. The scientists will also present various invasive plant species of Slovakia, they will also talk about ticks or parasitic diseases that they are researching. History enthusiasts will also enjoy themselves. During the weekend with SAS, they will be able to try writing with a calligraphic pen, decipher encrypted documents and learn about the archaeological sites of Egypt. Literature fans will be delighted with BOOK SWAP – book exchange.

For the academy, the 70th anniversary is a strong impulse towards the promotion of science. “Being seen and understood helps emphasize the irreplaceable role of scientists and SAS in the development of knowledge and society. I am glad that almost all of the 45 SAS institutions will present their activities on the square in front of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava this weekend, and I hope that in the coming years we will also visit other cities in Slovakia with our activities,” says Marek Radvanský, a member of the Presidium of SAS and co-organizer of the event.
