The JUICE space probe (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer), which has been traveling towards Jupiter since April 14, 2023, is currently undergoing a unique maneuver. After orbiting the Sun in a slightly elliptical path, it is now approaching Earth once again and during these days (August 19-20, 2024) it will utilize gravitational assistance of the Earth to accelerate further on its journey through Space. The JUICE space probe carries several scientific instruments designed to explore Jupiter’s moons. Space engineer Ing. Ján Baláž, PhD., member of the Department of Space Physics significantly contributed towards their development and construction.

“Gravitational assistances enables significant increase of velocity and change the direction of the flight without the use of the fuel, which represents a substantial saving of the energy and many interplanetary flights would not be possible without them,” explains Ján Baláž, who also adds that, for the first time in history, both the Moon and Earth are participating together in this maneuver.

“Maneuver performed in August will speed up the probe and adjust its orbit so that in a year it will encounter Venus, which will provide an additional boost. The probe will use orbital energy of the Earth two more times in 2026 and 2029 before it will be finally propelled it towards Jupiter and reach its orbit in July 2031,” the scientist explains.

The JUICE probe carries a wide array of scientific instruments designed to explore Jupiter’s moons Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These instruments will be activated, tested, and calibrated during the upcoming close flybys. Department of Space Physics at Institute of Experimental Physics SAS also contributed to the development and construction of these scientific instruments.

ESA website provides a detailed 3D model of the JUICE probe and you can track its journey through the solar system from launch to its final destination using the Where is JUICE now simulator.
