October 3, 2024 at 6:00 PM, Bulharská 4, Košice – SPACE::TALK

Where does Space begin? What exactly happens at the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer Space? And how can we even study this region, which ranges from 80 to 400 km in altitude—too high for airplanes and too low for satellites?

The answers to these questions come from the study of airglow, a faint light emission that you may not have heard of. Airglow is a fantastic indicator of processes that can even impact our daily lives. During the lecture, you will learn what airglow is and how it is formed. You’ll also discover how it was observed in Slovakia 60 years ago and how it is observed today. Finally, we’ll explore the physical processes that can be tracked thanks to airglow and why it’s important.
