The Slovak academic community and representatives of industry can participate in the space security programme. On this occasion, the “Slovakia National Space Safety Program Study” (SK-S2P) is being organized, the aim of which is to map the Slovak potential in this area. Slovak Academy of Sciences as a study partner invites the general professional public to an online workshop (carried out in English), which will take place on February 15, 2022 at 9 AM. Participants can look forward to series of lectures on plans and activities aimed at development of a program to protect our Earth from space threats.

The SK-S2P study will shape the direction of an important part of the Slovak space ecosystem in the upcoming years.

“Our ambition is to map the potential we have in Slovakia, to connect our capabilities to the needs of the European Space Agency (ESA) and thus create a” road map “of how Slovak institutions and industry should develop to be important partners in the field of space security,” says Šimon Mackovjak, astrophysicist and member of the Institute of Experimental Physics SAS who is the leader of the space weather part of the study.

Space security topic can be divided into several categories. Each of them is covered by experts from important Slovak institutions:

  • Space Weather – Institute of Experimental Physics SAS
  • Near-Earth Objects – Astronomical Institute SAS
  • Planetary Defense – Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University in Bratislava
  • Space Debris – Astros Solutions

“Slovak Academy of Sciences has a rich history in space research, which is closely related to space security. With the help of industry, we would like to use the acquired knowledge gained over decades of our research to create specific applications that fit into the ESA program and thus would be beneficial for European society,” said the astrophysicist.

The planned SK-S2P workshop is an important intersection of the activities of the entire study. Introductory lecture will be held by Holger Krag, Director of the ESA S2P Program. During the workshop, more than 20 speakers from Slovakia and abroad, academia and industrial sector will present their activities and their plans for the development of space security in Slovakia. The workshop is also open to the general professional public, who will have the opportunity to learn more and possibly participate in the presented topics.

Participation in the workshop is free, but it is necessary to register (online registration). Registration is possible until the beginning of the workshop. For more information, please visit http://www.astros.eu/promo/ and LinkedIn.
