Science Bedtime Stories about Alzheimer’s disease with Zuzana Bednáriková

The fourth episode of the Science Bedtime Stories podcast was broadcasted as part of the Science and Technology Week in Slovakia. This time, RNDr. Zuzana Bednárikova, PhD. from the Department of Biophysics IEP SAS was our guest and the third-graders from the Nižná brána 8 primary school in Kežmarok had some curious questions about Alzheimer’s disease and its research for her.

The children wanted to know how the disease originates, whether it could also affect children, or whether Alzheimer’s disease is infectious in the same way as COVID. They also learned the ways in which the brain seeks to compensate for outages at the onset of the disease, as well as what lifestyle can accelerate the onset of the disease. Interesting part of the podcast is a description of the collaboration with Chinese colleagues, which focuses on the possible use of traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of the disease. The final part of the podcast is devoted to personal questions. Here, Zuzana explains to the students how she decided to become a scientist and what she does in her free time.
