Prof. Peter Samuely, 1st Vice President of the SAS for Science, Research and Innovation, was a 4th guest of Lucia Molnár Satinská, host of the SAS scientific podcast. His research deals with solid state physics, low temperature physics and superconductivity. Although the subject of his research may sound difficult for the general public, he thinks that everyone can become experimental physicist.

“Experimental physics is for everyone, it’s fairly simple, although there is some mathematical apparatus behind it. But if it’s well organized, then maybe you don’t have to be the one who is developing the mathematical apparatus but you can focus on the experimental work which at first glance, and maybe at second as well, may not be so complicated,” says Peter Samuely.

The scientist is a member of the Centre of Low Temperature Physics in Košice. Together with his colleagues from the Institute of Experimental Physics they achieved significant success, as they were the first to experimentally confirm the existence of the so-called two-gap superconductivity.

“Our laboratory is unique, because it is one of only 12 places in the world which is capable to achieve temperatures of approx. 100 millikelvins. At such temperatures, properties of materials change significantly and the matter becomes easier for us to study,” says the physicist.

During his high school studies, Peter Samuely was member of big beat music band Efekt and used to compose lyrics of pop songs, some of them played even at music festival Bratislavská lýra. Learn more about Peter Samuely in the latest podcast episode.
