Distinguished Scientists Received the SAS Awards

The SAS Awards represent the highest form of recognition for the creative work of our scientists. The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) awards them annually for achievements in scientific research, science popularization, and also grants awards for exceptional international cooperation and to outstanding young scientists. During the ceremonial event at the SAS Congress Centre at Smolenice Castle, honors were also presented to exceptional scientific personalities.
“The Slovak Academy of Sciences is built upon top-level achievements of individuals and teams, which we have honored today. We also granted high honors to members of the former SAS Presidium and to the long-time President – not only for their scientific achievements but also for their contributions to science management and the administration of the SAS. I extend my sincere congratulations to all the awardees,” said Martin Venhart, President of the SAS.
SAS Awards for Scientific Research Achievements were presented to:
The research team from the Plant Biology and Biodiversity Centre SAS under the leadership of Mgr. Maksym Danchenko, PhD, including Mgr. Olha Lakhneko, PhD., Mgr. Maryna Kryvokhyzha, PhD., and MSc. Shubhi Mishra, for their scientific work Advanced Research on Plant Stress.
Prof. Elena Marushiaková and Prof. Veselin Popov from the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology SAS for their publication Stalin vs. Gypsies – Roma and Political Repressions in the USSR.
Barbora Buzássyová, PhD., from the Institute of History SAS for her monograph The Eastern Bloc and Sub-Saharan Africa – Czechoslovakia, UNESCO and Development Aid from the 1960s and Beyond.
SAS Award for Young Scientists:
Mgr. Oliver Zajac, PhD., from the Institute of History SAS, for the monograph Hôtel Lambert and the Austrian Empire, 1831–1846: The Political Discourse and Activities of Adam Jerzy Czartoryski.
SAS Award for International Scientific and Technical Cooperation:
The team from the Department of Biophysics, Institute of Experimental Physics SAS, comprising RNDr. Ing. Katarína Šipošová, PhD., MUDr. Andrey Musatov, DrSc., RNDr. Ivana Garčárová, and Dagmar Sedláková, for the series of works The Interplay Between Oxidative Stress and Protein Amyloidogenesis: Harnessing the Power of Nanoparticles.
SAS Award for Science Popularization and Societal Applications:
Ing. Michal Danko, PhD., from the Institute of Hydrology SAS, for his popularization of hydrology and water management, especially in Slovak mass media.
Mgr. Patrícia Fogelová, PhD., from the Social Science Institute of the Centre of Social and Psychological Sciences SAS, for a series of lectures, interviews, and discussions on totalitarian regimes, memory, and public space.
Prof. PhDr. Oľga Zápotočná, CSc., Mgr. Kamila Urban, PhD., and doc. PhDr. Zuzana Jančík Petrová, PhD., from the Institute for Research in Social Communication SAS, for the project Strategies of Effective Reading and Information Behavior and Their Study at Key Stages of Literacy Development A.
Archaeological Institute SAS, doc. PhDr. Matej Ruttkay, CSc., PhDr. Jaroslava Ruttkayová, and team, for the development of an archaeological park and museum in the village of Cífer, part Pác, in cooperation with the municipality of Cífer, Ing. Maroš Sagan, PhD, Ing. arch. Katarína Bacigálová, Mgr. art. Daniel Dido, and others, and with Prof. doc. PhDr. Vladimír Varsik, CSc., from Trnava University.

A thank-you speech on behalf of all awardees was delivered by Oliver Zajac from the Institute of History SAS. The full version of his speech is provided as an attachment.
The ceremonial event was musically accompanied by Professor Daniel Buranovský, a graduate of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where he later served as Vice-Rector for Research, Development, and Artistic Activities. He currently teaches piano at the same institution and performs at international music festivals. As a soloist, he has collaborated with all symphonic orchestras in Slovakia and has performed in almost every European country, as well as in the USA, Brazil, and Asia.
