The event will take place at the premises of the Department of Space Physics at Bulharská 4, Košice.

What to expect from SPACE:LAB Summer School 2026

Currently the space research is reaching the limits of data transmission capacities due to the enormous volume of data being collected. The future therefore belongs to the concept of Edge Computing – deploying artificial intelligence directly on board of satellites. This year’s summer school, “Towards Satellite Intelligence,” is designed for students and young professionals who want to combine space research, advanced engineering, and applied machine learning. During the summer school, we will explore three interconnected domains:

💡 Scientific: How does the modern scientific process work, from planning of measurements to interpreting physical phenomena? We will demonstrate why satellite data are only a raw foundation and why human cognitive abilities and critical thinking remain indispensable in discovering new insights and underlying principles.

🛰 Satellite Engineering: What subsystems make up modern space technology, and how are they developed, tested, and integrated? We will examine the hardware, radiation, and power constraints of orbital platforms that have so far limited the wider deployment of autonomous onboard systems.

💻 AI: What are the technical requirements for running AI models and neural networks in environments with limited computational resources? We will focus on modern programming approaches and code optimization techniques for specialized space hardware.

If you are interested in learning more about the path toward onboard data processing and in connecting rigorous science with modern software engineering, this summer school will provide you with both a solid theoretical foundation and an overview of current trends.

✅ Eligibility Criteria:

A genuine interest in space research and IT

English language – presentation materials and self-study resources will be provided in English

Knowledge of an object-oriented programming language at a user level, with at least 3 years of experience – Python will be used during the summer school

Ability to participate in the summer school with your own laptop

Registration

If you are interested in participating in the SPACE::LAB Summer School 2026, do not hesitate and register:

Deadline for registration: July 31, 2026

Registration contact: send e-mail to space-lab@saske.sk.

What to include in the email: Confirm that you meet the required criteria and briefly explain your motivation for attending the summer school.

We are looking forward to your participation!

This year, Institute of Experimental Physics SAS is once again organizing the SPACE::LAB Summer School, which will be held from August, 24 -26.
